The Hermida
Place

La Hermida is a small town that gives its name to the longest gorge in Europe, which connects Panes (Asturias) with Potes (Cantabria). La Hermida offers us a multitude of services for the mountaineer who comes to the Picos de Europa: Hostel, spa, hostels, restaurants, climbing routes, hot springs on the banks of the Deva river and, of course, its two famous via ferratas. “La Hermida” and “El Milar” .

El Milar is a small via ferrata in its route but demanding and fun. It is a diagonal climb to go to a crossing above the Deva river. We will culminate with some simple climbing steps to access the north face, where we will descend until we reach the zip line that will cross us over the Deva River.

One hour is the duration of this via ferrata, at a gentle pace, enjoying the wonderful landscape that is offered to us at all times.</p >

The via ferratas were born in the Dolomites, when the need of the Italian army to cross the high and steep mountains without being seen by aviation, they created routes by nailing irons into the rock handholds mode. Later mountaineers from all over the world began to recover these routes as an alternative way to climbing. Nowadays it is a popular sport that is practiced by many people of all ages.

Iron installations can be varied as there is no standard model. In this case they are large iron staples anchored in the rock, which we use both to step on and to hold on to with our hands. The lifeline is a cable attached to the wall every four or five meters. We will wear carabiners along this lifeline at all times to avoid a possible fall.
