Pruneda Cave, Purón
Place

This activity consists of moving along the course of a river while passing through a cave.

Rivers form in mountains. Rainwater filters into the mountains through the cracks in the limestone soil of the Picos de Europa. The water accumulates inside where it moves until it finds an exit. We know this exit to the outside as the source or birth of a stream or river, depending on the flow it flows.

Now we imagine a river that finds a crack in the mountain and moves through it until it comes out on the opposite side of the mountain.

These conditions occur in the Purón ravine speleo. Purón is a small town located at the foot of the Cuera mountain range in the peaks of Europe and very close to Llanes and the Cantabrian Sea.

Purón is a town of emigrants (Indianos) who returned to their homeland after making their fortune in America. Upon their return they built large and ostentatious mansions, creating an architectural complex called “Indiano Houses.”

Several sources come together to form the river that returns to the interior of the mountain, crossing it from south to north through the Pruneda cave, although the popular name is “Purón Ravine Speleo.”

If it is already exciting to descend a ravine or practice caving in a cave, the combination of both (caving and ravine) reveals the greatest and most extraordinary adventure that the Picos offer us . of Europe.

We will arrive by 4×4 to the winter resorts of Purón where we will equip ourselves. Three hundred meters from the SUV we find a stream that invites us to enter the Pruneda cave. We can clearly see the drosaje (water erosion on the rock) as we move through large rooms with high ceilings, we will see few formations but these will be of great quality: lava flows, flags, stalactites and stalagmites among others.

Don’t be fooled, this is pure adventure and we will have to rappel, climb, swim… and everything inside the cave.

Once outside, the adventure continues since we must climb the north face to the top and descend the south face (more gently) to reach the vehicle.

Two and a half hours in the cave, plus thirty minutes to get back to the SUV. Demanding, exciting, amazing, comforting.

🔦 FAQ: Purón Cave Canyoning

It is one of the most complete and spectacular activities we offer. It consists of descending a canyon that runs through the interior of a cave. It combines the best of caving (exploring underground formations) with the best of canyoning (abseiling, water, and moving along the stream). It is a unique underground adventure.

It is considered an introductory–intermediate level activity. You do not need previous experience in caves or canyoning, but you should have a normal physical condition and not suffer from claustrophobia. You will be the main protagonist of the progression, walking through galleries and performing abseils in underground waterfalls while following the technical instructions.

The Purón system is quite spacious throughout most of the route. We provide detailed information about the route before entering so you can proceed with confidence and know what to expect in each gallery. Safety comes first, and the goal is for you to enjoy the experience.

The total duration is approximately 3 to 4 hours. This includes preparation and equipment delivery, the walk to the cave entrance, the descent inside the cave, and the return to the meeting point.

You only need to bring a swimsuit and sports shoes (with laces) that can get wet and have good grip, as the cave floor can be slippery.

We do not have a fixed minimum age as long as minors are accompanied by their parents or legal guardians and are eager for adventure. If you have any doubts about whether it is suitable for children, call us at 676 799 839.

We provide all the specific equipment required for caves and water:

  • Technical equipment: Harness, helmet, 5mm wetsuit, latest-generation 2026 headlamps, and a backpack with first aid kit, knife, waterproof barrel, main rope, auxiliary rope, carabiners and descenders.
  • Thermal protection: Full neoprene wetsuit to protect you from the temperature of the underground water.
  • Insurance: Civil Liability and Accident Insurance.

The darkness is total, but thanks to the lighting systems we provide you will be able to clearly see the incredible geological formations, waterfalls, and the route while you progress independently along the underground stream.
